Today the peasant and landless movements in Brazil not only have to confront the latifundiários, the traditional Brazilian landowners. To an ever increasing extent they also have to confront the international capital, which expand on Brazil’s arable land. The government has opted for an agricultural model which prioritizes agrobuisiness over peasants. The result is huge monocultures of crops like soya, sugar cane for ethanol production and eucalyptus for pulp.
Via Campesina, the international peasant movement, has strongly opposed this agricultural model. As an alternative, they have put forward the concept of “food sovereignty”, each country’s right to decide over its own food production in order to satisfy the needs of the people. This does not only require a new agricultural model, but also a new societal project.
